On a day when the Tamil Nadu government banned the controversial movie 'Dam 999' from hitting the screens in the State, Vimala Raman, who has played a crucial role in the film, has distanced herself from its controversial knot.
"I am basically an NRI and born and brought up in Australia before K Balachandar sir introduced me in his film Poi. So, I honestly do not know anything about the history of dams in India," the 'Raman Thediya Seethai' actress said.
Vimala, who is currently shooting for a Telugu movie in Manali, added: "When the script was narrated to me by director Sohan Roy, I viewed it only from the cinematic perspective. I am sure there was no intention of hurting the sentiments of Tamils.”

On Thursday, the government of Tamil Nadu banned the screening of film 'Dam 999' with immediate effect following requests from various quarters. The movie is believed to be based on disputed Mullaperiyar Dam between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Directed by Sohan Roy, the film centres on a dam and how it collapses and ravages the surrounding areas. The English film, released by Warner Bros, is scheduled for 25 November. It has been dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.
Political parties protesting against the film in Tamil Nadu alleged that the project financed by Keralites, starring Indian and Hollywood actors, has been named Dam 999 referring to the legal rights held by Tamil Nadu over the dam for 999 years.
