Pirates of the Caribbeanfame Johnny Depp is all set to be a part of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson's upcoming movie The Rum Diary. The movie is based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, who is also credited as the creator of Gonzo journalism, a style of reporting where reporters involve themselves in the action to such a degree that they become central figures of their stories.
The Rum Diary has Johnny Depp playing the role of Paul Kemp, a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a rundown newspaper in the Caribbean. Amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction, Paul wants to carve out a secure niche for himself, but is challenged on many levels. It is interesting to note that earlier, Depp has also played a character based on Hunter S. Thompson, after starring in Terry Gilliam's 1998 adaptation of 'Fear And Loathing', In Las Vegas.
