Tollywood has lost many stalwarts during the year 2011 from all the departments and the void remains unfulfilled. It was a tragic end for the director known for his comedy films when EVV Satyanarayana bid adieu in January. He died young and at the peak of his career, exactly like his mentor Jandhyala. His rib tickling films from ‘Pema Khaidi’ to ‘Kathi Kanta Rao’ had enthralled many and he introduced or gave good openings to many artistes. Two writers Mullapudi Venkata Ramana and Mallemala, who had seen the film industry’s transformation through five decades, have put in the final dot this year bringing an end to ‘Dothi’ wearing writers’ generation. Mullapudi, along with Bapu, had given some astounding films to Tollywood from ‘Sakshi’ to the latest ‘Sri Rama Rajyam.’ In fact Ramana was known for penning dialogues having a punch laced with humor and lines having weight but sound very simple. Strong message with simple words has been his forte. He created the character of the naughty boy Budugu and Appa Rao, who lives on taking loans, which is his passion. In his last days Ramana wrote a serial ‘Kothi Kommachi,’ which is a semi biography and created a storm in literary circles when he defined copyright as a right to copy from other’s works and named some major hit films and their original versions. Mallemala too had created a sensation with his book ‘Naa Ishtam’ and made some remarks against contemporary top stars. He was also a producer, actor and director. His son Shyam Prasad Reddy is a producer as well. Another poet Jaladi too left the world. His rural stream of poetry even in film songs will remain afresh as he redefined the art of writing film songs by identifying some 64 words which are often used in songs. He kept away from those words in songs as far as possible which made him very popular. Choreographer Salim died in Chennai this year. Three Chief Ministers of two states, MGR, NTR, Jayalalithaa, danced to his tunes but Salim fumbled in the final step and fell flat in the lap of destitution. Mikkilineni, whose contribution to film and theatre is well recognition also passed this year. Nutan Prasad, who had a sway over Tollywood with his dialogue delivery and mannerisms had a near fatal accident while shooting for a film and became immobile. Turning the wheel chair to a will chair, he still made his contribution to the film land and theatre in his humble way and in the process breathed his last. Among artistes, the icon of Hyderabad, Rami Reddy and bi-lingual Sujatha passed away. Producer Dasari Padma was the other celebrity to go to unknown shores this year. She produced many hit films that her husband has directed. Tollywood also missed dialogue writer Gandham Nagaraju, music director Anil and lyricist Kaluva Sai during the year. North Korea’s neighbours and the wider world were last night nervously awaiting any dangerous developments after the sudden death of leader Kim Jong-il.
The 69-year-old head of the nuclear-armed nation was said to have suffered a massive heart attack on his luxury private train on Saturday morning.
Communist officials announced that his youngest son Kim Jong-un, a James Bond fan, would be his “great successor”.
South Korea and Japan put their armies on high alert and US officials were “closely monitoring” the situation amid fears Jong-un could launch an attack to prove his strength as new leader.
There were unconfirmed reports the country had test-fired a missile off its eastern coast – amid fears a power struggle between the military and politicians could destabilise the secretive country.
Victor Cha, a former US National Security Council director, added: “The most likely scenario for regime collapse has been the sudden death of Kim Jong-il. We are now in that scenario.”
Jong-il suffered a stroke in 2008 and had slowly been transferring power to his youngest son.
But his death – which was kept quiet for 48 hours – still came as a shock to North Koreans and Western governments. State TV showed North Koreans crying and breaking down hysterically – although it is believed much of the footage was stage-managed by Communist chiefs.
The news was announced on state TV and by the official Korean Central News Agency just after midday local time.
Jong-il’s funeral – expected to be attended by more than a million mourners – will take place in capital Pyongyang on December 28. Government officials declared a period of national mourning from December 17 to 29.
State TV warned “entertainment” will be banned during the mourning period. Jong-il will lie in state in Kumsusan Palace – where the embalmed body of his father Kim Il-sung, whom he succeeded in 1994, is still on display.
Western governments have repeatedly tried to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions. But there are fears Jong-un will ignore their pleas to avoid being seen as a weak leader by his people.
Foreign Secretary William Hague urged Jong-un to recognise that talks with the international community offered the best hope of improving the lives of his people. He said: “This could be a turning point. We encourage North Korea to work for peace.”

55ft Snake Shocks World
Photograph purporting to show a 55ft snake found in a forest in Malasia has become an internet sensation.
The thread claimed the snake was one of two enormous boas found by workers clearing forest for a new road. They apparently woke up the sleeping snakes during attempts to bulldoze a huge mound of earth.
“On the third dig, the operator found there was blood amongst the soil, and with a further dig, a dying snake appeared,” said the post.
“By the time the workers came back, the wounded boa had died, while the other snake had disappeared. The bulldozer operator was so sick that he couldn’t even stand up.”
The post claimed that the digger driver was so traumatised that he suffered a heart attack on his way to hospital and later died.
The dead snake was 55ft (16.7m) long, weighed 300kg and was estimated to be 140 years old, according to the post.

Indian with 39 wives, 94 kids is strangest story of 2011
An Indian man with 39 wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren, all living under one roof, holds the numero uno position in Ripley's Believe It Or Not top 11 strangest stories for this year.Ripley's Believe It Or Not!, is considered to be the authority on all things odd, amazing and unusual.
The annual list of the strangest stories of the year was released by it on Thursday.
Topping the list if 11 strange stories, is the story reported by London based The Telegraph, about Ziona Chana, who lives in a four storied building with 100 rooms in a mountainous village in Mizoram state, sharing borders with Burma and Bangladesh.
"It's a safe bet that Ziona Chana would not be impressed watching 19 Kids And Counting or Sister Wives. The 66-year-old Indian man has 39 wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren," said Ripley’s Believe It Or Not in a statement.
"I once married 10 women in one year," Chana is quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
According to the daily, Chana met his oldest wife, who is three years older than he is, when he was 17.

Sachin Now Eligible 4r Bharat Ratna
New Delhi: In a significant move, the government of India made changes in the eligibility criteria for a person getting the Bharat Ratna. According to media reports, this move will pave way for Sachin Tendulkar to get the country's highest civilian honour.
The Prime Minister's Office has accepted the Ministry of Home Affairs' recommendation of broad basing the Bharat Ratna category. The change in rules came at the behest of the Sports Ministry.
It's not just Sachin Tendulkar but even our politicians who are hoping to hit a sixer. The demand for a Bharat Ratna for Sachin is becoming louder and now government sources say that it could be a matter of time before he gets the nation's highest award.

Pakistan crush Bangladesh by innings & 184 runs
Pakistan thrashed Bangladesh by an innings and 184 runs on the penultimate day of the opening Test here at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Monday to gain a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Bangladesh, trailing by 459 runs, resumed their second innings at 134-4 and were bowled out for 275 after lunch to suffer their 62nd defeat in 72 Tests.
Left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman grabbed four wickets for 88 runs as he, off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and paceman Aizaz Cheema shared five wickets that fell on the fourth-day.
Fast bowler Rubel Hossain did not bat due a shoulder injury, suffered while fielding on Sunday.
Debutant Mohammed Nazimuddin (7
, Shakib Al Hasan (51) and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (49) were the main run-getters for Bangladesh.
Cheema ended the innings when he had Shahadat Hossain (21) caught by Umar Gul in the covers in his first over with the second new ball.
Rehman dismissed well-set Nazimuddin and former captain Shakib in the morning session before accounting for Rahim to finish the match with seven wickets after having taken three in the first innings.
Ajmal was the other wicket-taker in the morning when he bowled Mohammad Mahmudullah for no score.
Nazimuddin was involved in two stands, adding 78 runs for the fifth wicket with Shakib and 47 for the next with Rahim before being caught by Ajmal at mid-off.
Opener Nazimuddin, 41 overnight, hit two sixes and nine fours in his 186-ball knock.
He was the second-highest scorer in the first innings with 31.
He defied the Pakistani attack for more than an hour and completed his half-century when he turned Rehman to deep mid-wicket for three runs.
He then played a couple of big shots, lofting Rehman over extra cover and then Ajmal over mid-wicket for sixes. He gave two chances off Ajmal after completing his half-century but wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal missed both.
Bangladesh had added only 24 runs to their overnight total when Shakib was trapped leg-before by Rehman after hitting eight fours in his ninth Test half-century.
Pakistan had on Sunday posted a mammoth 594-5 declared in their first innings in reply to Bangladesh's 135, with Younis Khan (200 not out), Mohammad Hafeez (143) and Asad Shafiq (104) being the main scorers.
