Sunday night at the O2 Arena in London revealed that there is a lot of steam left in the 30-year-old Swiss maestro, Roger Federer, as he claimed the season ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Finals.

The fourth seed Swiss bagged the circuit finale trophy for a record sixth time in his career, beating the legendary Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras, who had five titles apiece to their name at the ATP World Tour Finals. Federer’s championship victory on Sunday propelled him to the number three spot in latest the South African Airways 2011 ATP World Rankings released on Monday. He displaced Britain’s number one, Andy Murray, pushing him down to the fourth spot at the conclusion of the ATP season this year.

The new world number three came to London trailing a 710 ranking points’ difference with Murray. With the third seed Briton pulling out of the event in the round robin stage due to a groin injury, Federer only needed to qualify for the final of the tournament to topple him from the third rank. The Swiss maestro went all the way undefeated in the tournament to receive 1500 rankings points, breaking into 790 points lead against Murray in the latest release of the ATP ratings.

The Swiss is very excited to get into his winning groove and believes there is more to come from him in the coming season. Federer has not been able to bag a single Grand Slam title in this year for the first time since 2002 but he is very hopeful for lifting one in 2012 ATP season.

“Sure, to win Grand Slams would be nice,” said the Basel native, who holds the record of having won 16 major singles titles. “I've missed out on a few occasions now this year, and maybe also some last year. So I feel like it might be around the corner. Maybe not. The other players obviously have a role to play in this.”

Federer termed his title victory at the O2 as “the strongest finish” to the season he has ever had in his career. The Swiss toiled extremely hard throughout the season to get back his vintage form and finally got it towards the end of the year. After a semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic at the US Open, Federer has not dropped a single match till date, riding a 17-match winning streak to finish the season.
