For his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, Dev Anand was honoured with the prestigious the 'Padma Bhushan' in 2001 and 'Dada Saheb Phalke Award' in 2002.

Dev Anand: 1923-2011: The 'evergreen romantic superstar' of Indian cinema died in London on Saturday night following a cardiac arrest. He was 88.

Dev Anand made his debut as an actor in 1946 in 'Hum Ek Hain'. By the time his 'Ziddi' was released in 1947 he was a superstar and has never looked back.

Dev Anand was born in 1923 in Shakargarh Tehsil of Gurdaspur district, now in Narowal District of Pakistan.

Dev Anand, who was in London for medical check up was not keeping well for the last few days, family sources said.

Dev was the second of three brothers who were actor in Hindi cinema.

Dharam Dev Anand was one of the most loved Bolywood actor and filmmaker.

'Guide' went on to win Filmfare Awards in five other categories including 'Best Film' and 'Best Director' and was sent as India's entry for the Oscars in the foreign film category that year.

He established his film production company 'Navketan International Films' in 1949 and has produced more than 35 movies.

Versatile Dev Anand has given countless hits like 'Paying Guest', 'Baazi', 'Jewel Thief', 'CID', 'Johny Mera Naam', 'Amir Garib', 'Warrant', 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' and 'Des Pardes'.

Dev Anand considered himself to be lucky to get a chance to star opposite such an established actress and accepted the offers.

Dev Anand made his debut as an actor with the movie 'Hum Ek Hain'(1946).

In the late forties Dev Anand got a few offers to star opposite singer-actress Suraiya in woman oriented films, as the male lead.

Dev was offered his first big break by Ashok Kumar. He spotted Dev hanging around in the studios and picked him as the hero for the Bombay Talkies production, 'Ziddi', costarring Kamini Kaushal (1948).

Dev chose Guru Dutt as director for the crime thriller, 'Baazi' (1951). The film starring Dev Anand, Geeta Bali and Kalpana Kartik was a trendsetter regarded as the forerunner of the spate of urban crime films that followed in Bollywood in the 1950s.

He starred in a string of box office successes for the remainder of the 1950s opposite newcomer Waheeda Rehman in 'C.I.D'. (1956), 'Solva Saal', 'Kala Pani', 'Kala Bazar' and 'Baat Ek Raat Ki'.

While shooting these films, he became romantically involved with Suraiya.

The collaboration was a success at the box office and the pair Dev Anand %u2014 Kalpana Kartik were offered many films to star in together. They signed all the film offers and subsequently the movies 'Aandhiyan', 'Taxi Driver', 'House No. 44' and 'Nau Do Gyarah'.
