Amitabh Bachchan has a lot of accolades and acclaims going for him. He has even been crowned Actor of the Millennia.  But frankly, like every other actor, even Bachchan has had a lean spot, before Major Saab, which was a failure at the box office, but his role was appreciated in it, he acted in several movies that he as well as we would like to forget. We did not select these movies on whether they hits or flops, because even his flops like Ajooba, Toofan and Jaadugar were extremely likeable and watchable.  We have just chosen this list on one and only one criteria – we were bored out of our skull while watching these movies.

5. Akayla

Akayla, which means ‘Alone’ in Hindi was the beginning of the great Amitabh Bachchan slump back in the mid-nineties. In this movie, he starred with Aditya Panscholi, Jackie Shroff, Meenakshi Sheshadri and Amrita Singh. He played the role of Vijay, a straight police officer who is after a criminal mastermind, who has a twin brother to bail him out of trouble whenever he is arrested. When Vijay tries to arrest the duo again, they hide in his friend’s house and finally kill the friend and his wife. Vijay now finds out that the two have his younger brother on their hitlist, and has to reach him before the villains do.
Akayla was a flop at the box office, because the audience as not ready to see middle aged actor in the main role. Though Amitabh Bachchan went on to later portray middle aged and even elderly protagonist, this movie had so much of Bollywood masala in it, that the audience could not bring itself to taste it. The movie was written by Salim Khan and produced by G P Sippy. It was directed by Ramesh Sippy, who had famously directed Amitabh Bachchan in Sholay.

4. Indrajeet

Another crime against Amitabh Bachchan, this one starred the mainstay of commercial movies in the nineties. It had Jaya Prada, Amitabh Bachchan, Kader Khan, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Kumar Gaurav and Saeed Jaffrey. Once again, Amitabh Bachchan plays a strict police officer who breaks off with his fiancé when she stands up to him, as Indrajeet tries to arrest her father, a criminal. Many years ago, his fiance’s brother kills his adopted daughter and his fiancé, and now Indrajeet has to avenge the deaths.
Though this was another potboiler, the audience was done and done with action, deaths and melodrama. Amitabh Bachchan in his weird get up did not help either. This one is another of those movies that make the list of ‘so bad, these are good’ movies.
The movie was prodeuced by Ramesh Behl and was directed by K . V Raju.

3. Mrityudaata

This movie, released in 1997, was the precursor to the publicity hype that you see when a movie is about to release today. Touted to be his comeback role, Mrityudaata was one of the first movies to book television advertisement slots and come up with an item song. Only, in this movie, the item song was an adrenaline rushing Punjabi song sung by Daler Mehndi. Unfortunately, the movie was a debacle at the box office. You would have thought that the people understood right there and then that even if a movie was made popular with publicity, it would not work if there was no substance in it.
This was another revenge drama made on the fact that Amitabh Bachchan is an awesome film actor. It was all about his brother commits suicide; because he is implicated in something, and then Bachchan goes on to extract revenge. The movie was as forgettable as the script was. This one starred Dimple Kapadia, Karishma Kapoor, Arbaaz Ali Khan and Paresh Rawal.

2. Insaniyat

What would you get if you put Amitabh Bachchan and Sunny Deol in a movie together? Add to that Chunky Pandey, who can actually carry out a role if given the right one? Well, if you thought it would be an action fest, think again, because Insaniyat had Amitabh, Sunny and Chunky together. It was about Amitabh Bachchan, a police officer – again – who takes the help of two criminals who keep fighting each other to defeat Brijbhan, a criminal mastermind who is behind ‘all the terrorist activities’ in India. This one was another debacle at the box office, and mainly because most of the screentime was spent when Amitabh would admonish the two for fighting each other, instead of actually having the movie move forward.

This movie is so bad that it did not get a release till date. This movie was announced in 1997 and was completed in 2003, but has still to see the light of the day. Maybe, with Karishma Kapoor now making a comeback, there is a chance that the producer might think of releasing this movie, but that too seems quite impossible, because the starcast has their hijinks quite a few times, but has done nothing for the movie. Arshad Warsi and Karishma Kapoor play young lovers, whose life gets into tatters when Arshad is framed in a murder case. The only hope that the young lovers now have is Amitabh Bachchan, a blind lawyer.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan and family have been overjoyed concerning the newest adding up to the family, and have made no reservations regarding having secrecy in their happiness. Well, the renowned actor, who is well-known for his emotional writing on his blog, simply emptied his heart out to his fans and readers regarding his very cutest grand-daughter.
Big B expresses on his blog, “The soft innocence of nature rests in my arms, oblivious of what else happens around her. Occasionally she opens her large and what looks now to be eyes of the lighter hue, which those that have dealt with similar, know shall change with time. Often the gentlest of smiles quiver across her pouted upper lip, the shut eyes bringing expression through the brows and the settling down to that dream she must dream. Her head covered in the littlest of head gear she will ever adorn, snuggles into her mini quilt of varied colors dominated by the pink softness of its material.”

Recalling on the days from his past, Bachchan says, “As I look down upon her I bring myself back to the visual when I had placed her Father in just condition into my Father’s hands, to be heralded into our home. I stare at her in silence. She reciprocates in similar vein. It is too delicate a moment. I am unaccustomed to such delicate state. Should I shake my arms cradle like to give comfort, or maybe simply remain still as family cameras and members gather around. The ladies about, ogle with baby like sounds intermittently, and deliver diverse opinions on who she resembles. There are animated conversations of how this state of delivery was reached, in some intricate terminology and detail. These words are new to me. I have not heard them. Or perhaps not heard them often enough to know them. After a pregnant pause it is time for her to be airlifted from within my arms. I give this angelic face a prolonged look …”
And lastly, not overlooking his ancestry, Big B discloses his beliefs by saying, “Dad! I hold the 9th Bachchan in my hands .. this family that you started .. !! Amitabh, Ajitabh, Shweta, Nilima, Namrata, Abhishek, Naina, Bhim and now …this beauty, unnamed so far … I hope you and Ma look upon us from above and bless us and your latest addition. To carry forward what then may have seemed a somewhat limited expectation. The tradition continues and may it prosper by your love and your aashirvaad.”
We are sure that every father, would-be father or grandfather would have his eyes with emotional drops of water. We bless the baby girl and the family and happy and blissful life ahead with more and more such happiness in their basket.

In what will go down as a defining moment in Indian Cinema, the day we were patiently waiting for has arrived.
The Great Gatsby marks Amitabh Bachchan's first ever mainstream Hollywood movie to be directed by the Oscar nominee Buz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge). Mr. Bachchan plays Meyer Wolfsheim, a Jewish man Gatsby describes as a gambler who had fixed the World Series. Wolfsheim is a clear allusion to Arnold Rothstein, a New York crime kingpin who was notoriously blamed for the Black Sox Scandal which tainted the 1919 World Series.
The principal photography began this week on Warner Bros. Pictures' and Village Roadshow Pictures' The Great Gatsby. The film is a new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel from the uniquely imaginative mind of writer-producer-director Baz Luhrmann. The film maker will create his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the title role.
The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own Great American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
Academy Award nominee DiCaprio (Blood Diamond, Aviator) plays Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire starring as Nick Carraway; Joel Edgerton and Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan (An Education) as Tom and Daisy Buchanan; Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke as Myrtle and George Wilson; and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker. Indian film legend Amitabh Bachchan will play the role of Meyer Wolfsheim.
Oscar nominee Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) directs the film in 3D from a screenplay co-written with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce, based on Fitzgerald's book. Luhrmann produces, along with Catherine Martin, Catherine Knapman, Lucy Fisher and Academy Award winner Douglas Wick (Gladiator). The executive producers are Barrie M. Osborne and Bruce Berman.
Two-time Academy Award-winning production and costume designer Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge) also designs with the director. The editors are Jason Ballantine, Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond, and the director of photography is Simon Duggan.
Luhrmann said, "Fitzgerald loved movies and was a passionate believer in the power of cinema. The Great Gatsby has been adapted for the screen no less than four times. Fitzgerald's story defies time and geography. The vision and the goal of our remarkable cast and creatives is to do justice to the deftness of Fitzgerald's telling, and illuminate its big ideas and humanity. This is our challenge and our adventure."
The Great Gatsby is being shot in Luhrmann's native Australia. The film maker stated, "The opportunity to make the film in Australia with the Bazmark creative team is very important to us; the assistance from Screen Australia and the NSW Government has made that possible."
The film will be distributed in 3D and 2D by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.
